Created matte paintings to return the now green valleys to the coal-choked 1960's. Removed various modern elements from the frame and added footage of 'The Heiress' to a cinema screen for the first episode.

The most extensive part of my work on Indian Doctor was in its opening sequence where Dr Prem and his wife arrive at the lonely station and make their way towards the village. Even though we filmed it in a real mining valley, industry had long since stopped and the hills were landscaped and green. I was asked to return them to the level of industrial activity of the 1960's by adding pit heads, slag heaps and random buildings. Most of the elements came from photographs, although the rotating pit head in the background was a real movie of the Big Pit, further down the valley. Smoke elements and a new sky added movement. Both characters were hand rotoscoped for the entire ten second shot.

station_beforestation_afterThe second shot of this sequence was on the same station but this time removing the rather modern camping site visible in the background. Although the shot was static, the train was pulling out of the station in this shot, which required rotoscoping and removing elements visible behind the windows.
