Beasthunters: Infected and Archituthius Slimbus

infected_master-(08028)VFX Supervisor and Compositor for a two episode pilot for ChannelFlip and the BBC, directed by Ryan Andrews and starring Jamie Lennox, Louis Waymouth, Jaime Winstone, Robert Llewellyn and James Cordon. After a collaboration with director Ryan Andrews on his It's My Shout film in the summer of 2009, I was brought to the project to supervise the London-based shoot and the later greenscreen session. I then spent two weeks completing the compositing for the project, totalling approximately fifty shots. The final episodes were premièred on the BBC iPlayer. This was an amazing project to work on, not least because of the incredible people involved and how welcome they all made me (being the newcomer to the party.)

The Devil Inside Him

Cinema trailer for the National Theatre of Wales' production of John Osborne's The Devil Inside Him. I was VFX supervisor and compositor for the advert, keying the greenscreen footage and adding the 3D environment with a smoky spotlight. I also combined a number of takes to make it seem like different sides of the actor's personality were trying to break away from his body. The advert was directed by Ryan Andrews, lighting by Viv Thomas and Ceiron Jenkins, with the titles animated and rendered by Alan Morse. Filmed on a Canon 5D at Ceiron's Elywood Studios. Sound design by Jeb Hawkins.

Black Tears

Black Tears is a video installation by the Irish artist Cecily Brennan, cinematography by Seamus Deasy. Cecily contacted me through friends who had seen my work on Reign of Death and was looking for someone to rotoscope an actress' real tears to make them look like they were black ink. After a moment's hesitation, I thought the challenge was too good to pass up so I agreed to do the work. Everything was completed in Adobe After Effects using Mocha-AE to track the actress' skin.

Grandpa in my Pocket: Series 2

The second series of Grandpa in my Pocket for Adastra Creative and CBeebies, for which I was VFX supervisor and digital workflow manager. This series was commissioned on the strength of the first, which had been a massive hit for CBeebies and became one of the top rated shows on the channel, as well as the BBC iPlayer. Little of the workflow was changed but the number and the complexity of the shots increased so that we completed 1051 VFX shots overall, including a large number of moving and interaction shots.

Reign of Death

Short film directed by Matt Savage and starring Noel Clarke (Doctor Who, Kidulthood). The film is a tech noir thriller about a private eye chasing down a robot near the scene of a murder. Shot on the RED camera, it was heavily graded to look like a noir film of the 40's yet features a considerable number of visual effects, not least Jimmy the CG robot. I was VFX Supervisor on the shoot and VFX Producer during the six weeks of postproduction.

Grandpa in my Pocket: Series 1

A comedy drama series for CBeebies from Adastra Creative about Grandpa (James Bolam) who possesses a magic shrinking cap. His grandson Jason (Jay Ruckley) is the only one who knows about the cap and, when nasty Aunt Loretta (Susan Jameson) comes round for tea or a bully is causing trouble, Grandpa shrinks to help Jason win the day. However, things don't always go to plan and Jason has to help Grandpa get out of quite a few scrapes. This series is an inventive blend of greenscreen and CG visual effects to help bring the wild world of Sunnysands to life. I was VFX supervisor on the show and oversaw not only the shoot itself but the completely digital workflow that enabled the production to complete its nearly 850 effects shots in three months.

Martha, Jac and Sianco

Based on the award-winning book by Caryl Lewis, Martha, Jac and Sianco is about a sister and two brothers living on a failing farm in mid Wales. It's an allegorical tales about the decline of the Welsh farming industry and, despite its somewhat downbeat subject matter, was S4C's Christmas film for 2008. I had worked with director Paul Jones on O Na! Y Morgans and Con Passionate and Dinamo were tasked with creating a number of subtle by important effects for the film, including make a cow bite off its own udder. Not a showreel for the faint-hearted!

Mutant Chronicles

A blend of fantasy, horror and action genres, Mutant Chronicles is about a mission to rid the world of the terrifying mutants who are disturbed from their slumber under the earth by a deady world war. Directed by Simon Hunter, the film uses a large amount of greenscreen photography to create a wartorn world on a low budget. Dinamo were brought the project by Llyr Williams, who had previously worked with Simon on a seven minute promo reel in order to sell his vision to the producers. Llyr did most of the work on the project and I helped him with a lot of the keying and compositing late in production.

Sibrydion: Pam Fod Adar Yn Symud i Fyw

Our second music video for S4C's series Bandit. Primarily directed by Llyr Williams, we decided to continue our focus on VFX-lead videos but go for something more urban and less fantastical than our previous greenscreen work. Shot at the Bandit studios, the band were filmed against alternate white and black backgrounds and then comped onto footage of Cardiff's miriad billboards. Additional photography of the extensive building work taking place in Cardiff city centre were augmented with flocks of crows.

2 Dy a Ni Titles

2 Dy a Ni is a comedy drama for S4C about a large, extended family living in two houses that have been knocked through to create one big warren of rooms. The series follows the lives of the children, some of whom are adopted, and the mother and father who try to maintain control of their charges. Dinamo were asked to design the titles for the series and I did the design and compositing for it over a four week period. The series was directed by Peter Edwards.

Coal House

Our work on Coal House began when we were approached by Indus Productions to provide visual effects for the reality series about three families experiencing life in 1920's Blaenavon. We pitched to do their titles (a helicopter shot moving up a valley that slowly changed from 2007 to 1927) and various matte paintings to remove anachronous details such as pylons and modern signs. However, budgetary constraints caused them to rethink their plans and instead we were asked to provide visual effects for a cinema advert for the series. Shot on greenscreen and completed in HD, the advert was directed by Phillip Moss with music by John Rea.

Pobol Y Cwm Titles

Pobol Y Cwm is the long running Welsh soap set in the fictional town of Cwmderi. In August 2007, Dinamo was one of five companies who bid to design and produce the new titles for the show, titles that would run daily for the next five years. Although we were initially unsuccessful, we were instead hired by the internal BBC design department who had by then won the tender. The brief was to create a landscape view of Cwmderi, passing from dawn to midday. Our solution was to create a completely digital valley so that every element could be controlled and altered. We spent about four weeks in total on the project and it was one of the most punishing and rewarding of that year!

Blonde

Blonde is an upcoming film project co-written and directed by Caradog James of Red and Black Films, who also directed Little White Lies. This short piece was shot as a funding promo and, due to it's low budget nature, couldn't feature all the prosthetic effects Caradog wanted to help sell the full horror of the main female character attacking and eventually killing the man in the shower. Also, because of the budget, he had to film the actress with flesh coloured underwear and this meant that the promo lacked the polish needed to sell the full project. Caradog asked me to have a look at the piece and see what I could do to remove some of the visual flaws and add more atmosphere and blood effects. Warning: this is a horror film with extreme violence so this section is definitely not for children or the workplace.

Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog: Missus Glaw

A music video for xthe S4C series Bandit for the North Wales-based band Cowbois Rhos Botwynnog. Shot at the same time as Love is Sunshine, the project is a completely greenscreen video that reflects the theme of the song: looking for rain! It took us two weeks to complete the video and it's my favourite of the two.
