This is Phil's third sketch for me and it's always a treat to watch him work. His drawings are incredibly detailed and he takes great pains to fill out the backgrounds with minutae and perspective depth. I was flicking through his books of original art and a particular story he did featuring a shark-headed villain stood out so I asked him for a drawing based on that character. It's a really epic sketch and looks great as inked art. (Bristol International Comics Expo 2009)

I spent quite a bit of time at Phil's stand at the last convention and it was good to get another sketch from him. Amongst his work were pages from Monolith, a DC comics series that has yet to be republished as a trade paperback, and I really admired its quality and intricacy so I asked Phil to do me a sketch of the title character.

Just as Charlie Adlard was finishing his drawing, I noticed that Phil's desk was finally clear of the large queues that had been ever present the previous day. Gathering my sketchbook I quickly walked over and asked Phil for a drawing, not knowing exactly what work he'd done, just that his stand had some amazing drawings on display. As he started doing a group drawing of his characters, I chatting with both him and his wife about his work and it was clear he really took pride over the quality of his art. The detail of the pencil art for Wonder Woman and Monolith was astounding and incredibly cinematic. Each panel was filled with acute observations and eye catching moments without losing the flow of the story and the energy of the action. We must have spent about half an hour chatting by which time his queue had grown quite large, much to my embarrassment. I hope to catch up with Phil at another convention and perhaps get hold of some of his work to read before asking for another banner! (Birmingham International Comic Show 2007)
