Mike Mignola

Mike Mignola began his career drawing for Comic Reader before moving on to Marvel and then DC, working on such titles as Daredevil, Batman and Wolverine. He assisted with design and storyboarding on the film Bram Stoker's Dracula, a role he would return to on Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire, although with perhaps less success (not, I think, his fault!) In 1994 he began work on the first Hellboy comic, although it wouldn't be until the second story that he took over scripting duties as well. A runaway success, Hellboy continues today with two films already completed. Recent work includes Baltimore: Or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and The Amazing Screw-On Head.

Mike was perhaps the only person I didn't think I was going to be able to get a sketch from at Birmingham! Right from the start, the queues for his signing table were massive and it was only at about 4.00pm on the Saturday that I decided to get in line. Luckily, I must have caught the half an hour when the queue was short and he was happy to do a few sketches. After I explained the concept of the banners, he very quickly draw a Hellboy for me using just the ballpoint pen he had with him. It was really amazing to see his draw the character almost as if it were a signature. He barely made any guide marks, just drew the simple shape of the head and the surrounding skulls through instinct. Pleasant and approachable, he was at his desk for almost the entire weekend signing and drawing. Definitely a highlight! (Birmingham International Comic Show 2007)
