Lew's wide and varied career began with Brickman in 1979 and this lead to working on strips for Oink!, Buster, Viz, Beano, Dandy and a great number of other British classics. He created the characters of Tom Thug and Combat Colin and is currently working Team Toxic and Suburban Satanists for Herman Hedning magazine. Wikipedia entry Home page Blog

I met Lew at my first convention in Birmingham in 2007. He's a good friend of Mike Collins and we were all staying in the same hotel. Since then, it's been great to catch up with him at both Bristol and Birmingham, as well as read his ever-informative blog. Lew didn't have a table as such, but I missed the chance to get a sketch from him last time so he drew some random characters for me. I really love this style - anarchic and funny - and it's exactly the style I used to pore over and copy when reading Whizzer and Chips all those years ago. (Bristol International Comics Expo 2009) |

For me, this banner is perhaps the most nostalgic as Lew's style is exactly that of the Whizzer and Chips comics I grew up with during the 80's. I used to copy drawings of Sweeney Toddler into various sketch books and A4 pads my dad purloined from work. It's the way he draws the ears - I used to spend ages trying to get them at the right angle. I met Lew almost straight away after we arrived in the hotel and both he and Mike Collins introduced me to the slightly debauched world of comic conventions, for which I'll be forever grateful! I was lucky enough to catch Lew just as he was sitting down to do a signing and I was standing at the back of the queue for Mark Buckingham. I also took the opportunity to grab a copy of the recently published Brickman Begins, a collection of his first character's strips beginning in 1979. I then spent the whole of the train ride home giggling to myself and reliving my childhood. (Birmingham International Comic Show 2007) |
