Jamie Smart

Jamie is the writer and creator of Bear, Space Raoul and countless other insane, deceptively cute comic strips. Always funny and often rude, his work blurs the boundaries between the children's comics we all grew up with and a darker, more psychotic adult humour.

I'm not sure how I first stumbled across Jamie's work but my initial contact was definitely reading both volumes of Bear. The unbelievably funny and unsettling adventures of a talking teddy bear, his mild mannered owner and a psychotic cat called Looshkin was among the first comic books I bought and it was great to finally meet Jamie at the Bristol Comics Expo in May of 2006. I thought I'd recognised the influence of Tom Patterson (artist of Sweeney Toddler, among others) in his work and, sure enough, he confessed that Sweeney Toddler had been one of his favourites too. Although Jamie hasn't been to either Bristol or Birmingham since, I kept in touch and the result is the banner above. And suitably disturbing it is too! (Email commission 2009)
