Dave started his career on horror and sci-fi titles for DC Thompson and IPC but left to become Art Director of 2000AD when the magazine was established. Over the years, he's worked on a number of famous titles such as Dan Dare, Rogue Trooper, Doctor Who and numerous DC and Marvel titles. He's perhaps most famous as the artist of Watchmen andGive Me Liberty as well as writing his own title, such as The Originals

 Dave had a huge queue and was doing some very quick sketches. I'd got a Rorschach sketch from him last year so this time I took along Give Me Liberty and asked for a drawing of Martha Washington. I think that threw him a bit as I think everyone usually asks for a Watchmen sketch but he duly obliged. Sadly, he seemed a little distracted and completely missed the widescreen frame guide and, drawing over the whole page instead. I've therefore some a little image editing to make this into a suitable banner, repositioning both the drawing and the signature. (Bristol International Comics Expo 2009) |

 Dave had been on my list for the last convention in Birmingham but I managed to miss all of his signings. Luckily, I'd barely made it into the door when I spotted Dave signing at the 2000AD stand so I stepped into the queue and again managed to be the last one before the signing had to finish. I had my battered copy of Watchmen signed and he drew me a Rorschach portrait. I hope to catch him at the next convention in Birmingham and perhaps get something more personal, like The Originals.
