Bryan Talbot

Bryan's wide and varied career began in the underground comix of the late sixties and early seventies. Perhaps his best known work is The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, which began in 1978 and finished recently with its sequel Heart of the Empire. Other work includes the Beatrix Potter-inspired story The Tale of One Bad Rat and an exploration of his adopted town in Alice in Sunderland.

This is my third sketch from Bryan and it features the characters from his latest book Grandville, which launched at the convention. It's a really great steampunk adventure in the Tintin vein about anthropomorphic animals investigating a murder in an alternative world where Britain lost against Napoleon. Lots of fun literary asides and jokes with a genuinely thrilling plot. He's got more books in the series planned so I'll be first in line for those! (Birmingham International Comics Show 2009)

Bryan had quite a large table at the conventional, sharing it with Mark Stafford with whom he'd made Cherubs. However, this time I decided to get a Luther Arkwright sketch from Bryan and look over the oversized editions of his work, oddly only available in Greek. There were also sketches from his upcoming work Grandville, a detective steampunk thriller with anthropomorphic characters. (Bristol International Comics Expo 2008)

For this banner, I thought it might be interesting to ask Brian for a sketch from The Tale of One Bad Rat, rather than Luther Arkwright. I really enjoyed One Bad Rat and felt it was a very interesting and sensitive exploration of sexual abuse and how it affects the victims as they grow up. The blending of fantasy and reality allowed it to go beyond other dramas of this kind (for example, on television) and give it a more internal point of view. The sketch is of Helen, the One Bad Rat of the title, and the pet rat she adopts while living rough in London. (Birmingham International Comic Show 2007)
